Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus stated that to create a generation of entrepreneurs in Bangladesh, the education system must foster creativity. He shared this vision during his visit to the Education Ministry on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, in a meeting with officials from the ministry.
He remarked, “People are born entrepreneurs, but our education system trains them to be job seekers. This is a flawed approach.” Dr. Yunus emphasized the urgent need to reform the education system to develop a generation of entrepreneurs. “We need an education system that helps students become creative individuals and realize their full potential,” he added.
Dr. Yunus also chaired an advisory council meeting and highlighted that Bangladesh should move away from an education system overly focused on exam scores. “Marks are not everything, and this must be acknowledged,” he said.
Discussing the generation gap in society, he stressed, “We need to understand the language, aspirations, and thought processes of the younger generation. The older generation should actively share their experiences with the youth.”
He cautioned that a widening gap between generations could create societal challenges and urged for reducing this divide. Dr. Yunus also emphasized incorporating family values into the national curriculum to promote social harmony.
Integrating STEM Education
Building on Professor Yunus’s ideas, we can implement STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) to foster creativity and entrepreneurial skills. This system can be integrated into the current extracurricular framework. Initially, a pilot project could be conducted in selected schools to test its effectiveness. Gradually, the program can expand to the main towns, upazila levels, and eventually rural institutions.
To ensure success, it is essential to develop a dedicated team of STEM professionals. Only enthusiastic and capable individuals should be included in the STEM instructor panel. As the team grows, the number of instructors trained in STEM education will also increase.
Additionally, we must adopt modern STEM education technologies, starting with small-scale implementations before scaling up to a national level.
